  1. about 6"-8" in Lynnwood/Edmonds, and no winds to speak of -- thank goodness.

Cliff, you say it's not over yet? Curious to read your upcoming entry.

Thanks for staying on top of all this!

  2. Many thanks, Cliff. Fortunately, it looks like we missed the 'armageddon' of high winds and widespread power outages, and instead get to enjoy a beautiful day of white with heat and hot cocoa waiting inside!

As of 9AM in Kitsap County, south of Kingston: 6 inches on the nose of new snow, and there is currently a very fine, dry snow falling slowly but steadily.

  3. It appears that the really bad weather came in between 2am-6am. I was at a holiday party downtown on First Avenue near Pike Market and had no trouble driving friends home to Capital Hill at 1:30am. I went back to the party and slept on the host's couch. Left at 7:00 am to drive home.

After 15 minutes chipping through the coating of ice on my car, it took another hour to go four miles to White Center. Got stuck four times. I grew up in Michigan and do pretty well in the snow -- driving conditions are among the worst I've seen in 20 years living in Seattle. DON'T GO ON THE ROADS UNLESS IT'S AN EMERGENCY!

  4. Still snowing lightly on Bainbridge. Snow measures 6", hubby (who grew up in E. WA) says the snow compacts and evaporates to some extent? It's gorgeous. Glad it doesn't happen every week though.

  5. Friends and I pulled up your blog while enjoying a little conviviality last night prior to the final sledding session on Capitol Hill. This is one wonderful white Xmas season for the memories...kids sledding, snowball fights, neighbors visiting outdoors, helping strangers in stuck cars. Don't forget to visit the shut-ins in your community. To get around central part of Seattle I have been using 1st and 2nd gear on the AWD subaru, just fine for roads with moderate incline. Leave the steep stuff to the sledders! Thanks Cliff

  7. Are we headed back to a rainy, warmer (read:dull) PNW weather pattern now that this has moved through? Any more artic air in the forecast over the next couple of weeks?

  8. Lets hope the roads are clear by 12/23 or 12/24 - many of us have to travel for Christmas. I like snow as much as everyone, but even I'm getting sick of all this cold & monotonous white everywhere.

  9. My daughter is scheduled to take the GRE in Montlake Terrace at noon. They are not cancelling due to inclement weather. Yikes!

Eight inches in Lake Forest Park.

  10. We live on Snoqualmie Ridge with a very exposed eastern side and I thought the house would blow away last night. We lost power for most of the night but it's on now. I believe this is the windiest I've ever seen it here.

  11. "not over yet..." Yikes, that sounds ominous!

  12. About 5 and a half inches in Crown Hill. My pine branches are touching the ground. Great way to wake up on a solstice morning, if you don't have anywhere to go.

    Cliff, it's 'postmortem'.

  13. What's up with the weird (but fun) layer of icy stuff? My kids are having a ball launching pieces like frisbees. My husband thought there might have been rain mixed in last night...

  14. Snow seems to be melting here in Olympia, I was able to shovel it down to the pavement which was not possible the last 2 days. Snowshoed to the mailbox earlier, ice crust on top of slushy snow.

  15. 40,000 without power in Portland--ouch! This definitely was a major storm for the PNW, though the impact was widely varied across the region.

  16. We have 6 inches 0.5 miles west of the Hood Canal Bridge. It's a black and white postcard out my window.

  17. I have been reading this site a couple of times a day for about a week. It is great to have. Thanks Cliff.

I'm about a mile inside of Deception Pass at an elevation of about 20 feet. No loss of power last night and about 4+ inches of new fine dry snow this morning. A total of probably 6+ inches. It is still falling, pushed by a very light SE wind. Haven't seen the strong northerly winds we've had for several days for about 48 hours.

It is beautiful, quiet and I'm warm, with no place I have to go.

  18. Clff, do you have a wind gust for Snoqualmie Ridge last night?
Can't seem to get a reading on the news It was pretty hairy, but that's what vodka, tonic, generators and Ambien are for. Snow drifts up to 4 feet in places this AM. I don't think it was as bad as 03, but would love to get your thoughts.

  19. Thanks again for all the forecasts. I wonder though... do you think the snow totals we may see from this incoming storm will be heavier than the NWS says they will be? Cloud tops are rapidly cooling and the lapse rates are pretty high, so I wonder if we could see some thundersnow as well.

  21. I don't understand what the picture is from the 8:30 pm update - the one with all the little blue markings going all different directions?

  22. Here in Pacific (just south of Auburn) we have about 6-1/2" of snow.. I think 4" is from yesterday. No precipitation right now. Went for a long walk at 7:15 am.. about a mile to the Starbucks which was closed & then on over to the Albertsons to the instore Starbucks. Nobody else was out walking & only a couple cars passed me. It was absolutely beautiful. My walk took me past the White River which is partially frozen over & filled with fast moving pieces of ice that look like lily pads. Walking through the park was an adventure - the snow has a light crunchy layer & with each step I sunk about 6 inches... It was like a half hour on a stairmaster. Just heard that Auburn has asked everybody to stay off the roads so the hills must be pretty icy.

  23. Parents in Oak Harbor reported fierce winds by West Beach

  24. Nine-plus inches in Shelton and still snowing. We got a little of the icy-crusty thing this morning, along with some rain and snow mix, but now it is all snow. I haven't seen the lawn in seven days. The tree branches are getting very heavy. I'm going a little stir-crazy here.

  25. To the other "anonymous" of Snoqualmie Ridge... I use this website for the local wind, though I believe my street is windier than his weather station: http://www.garykerr.com/snoqualmiewx.htm
At our house I estimate it was 50 mph with 70+ mph gusts. Some shingles gone; wall of drifted snow in driveway.

The Seattle Times Says Washington State is in a Serious Drought. Is this True?

It is more than a little disturbing when a major regional newspaper (the Seattle Times) provides demonstrably inaccurate and deceptive weath...
