Later, 1/8" diameter hail pelted down hard for at least 10 minutes. There was a huge dark cell over the Teanaway heading east, having formed where summer thunderstorms often build up. Around here we get the orographic lift--it's all about the terrain.Debhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03644606340145339223noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478606652950905956.post-54945180480652370412012-04-06T10:59:07.761-07:002012-04-06T10:59:07.761-07:00Cliff, I just wish I'd actually get to experie...Cliff, I just wish I'd actually get to experience a thunderstorm around here once in a while. Yesterday I got a little hail but no lightning.

In the Rockies, when they say there will be thunder and lightning, that is what usually happens. Here, it seems to mean only a slight chance.

I notice that sometimes they say there will be lightning along the coast. With such cold water, is it possible there are acually more thunderstorms out there?

AnselAnselhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13835758313287462921noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478606652950905956.post-50554345209527731672012-04-06T09:49:20.413-07:002012-04-06T09:49:20.413-07:00I opened my door to speak with a neighbor and noti...I opened my door to speak with a neighbor and noticed I could see her breath--and at just after 5 pm! I figured it was showery weather pulling downdrafts of cold air. The 4km 3 hour precip showed this right on. Now at 10pm, you see it dying over land but flaring up over the ocean.

Why would ocean instabililty disappear during the day and return at night? Or is it just a coinincidence? I understand the 101 concept.smokejumperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05358322512081660205noreply@blogger.com
