Climatologically, the most costly meteorological disaster west of the Cascade crest occurs at this time of the year: massive wildfires associated with strong easterly winds.

And here are their dates, areas, and direct fatalities. Late August and early September are the favored times.
With high pressure inland and lower pressure along the coast, offshore-directed easterly winds develop, as illustrated by the winds at 850 hPa (about 5000 ft) at the same time.
Major fires on the western side of the Northwest can easily run into the billions of dollars and result in many injuries and deaths.
What about climate change? Will that make such fires more frequent?
Published research (some done by my group) has found that global warming will cause a DECLINE in widespread wildfires.
That is not a typo. A DECLINE.
Why? Because global warming preferentially warms the interior of the continent, with the less dense, warmer air weakening the interior high pressure that drives easterly flow

Great info about Sept. weather and large wildfires. While global warming may decrease easterly winds in the fall and reduce potential for large Sept wildfires, the record acreage burned this year in Oregon, think widespread wildfires, had nothing to do with easterly fall winds. Dry winter and spring followed by normal summer thunderstorms resulted in "widespread wildfires". Yep, rangeland fires in grass and shrubland (think cheat grass). If dry winters and springs persist due to climate change then "widespread wildfires" in the West will continue to be a weather event.

DeleteMy comment is referring only to 2026, not the future. I said "if" dry springs and winters" persist then we'll have widespread wildfires. And yes, future predictions are for more rain and less snow. Nobody knows if total precip, rain and snow combined, will be more or less. Also, the west is not restricted to Wash. state.
DeleteI have very fond memories of taking ATMOS 101 in the fall of 1977. I highly recommend this class to anyone with an interest in the subject.
ReplyDeleteFascinating stats. What this shows Is wildfires have been around much longer than we have! Even the early settlers in the 1800s reported massive fires in and around the Cascades with smoke for weeks in and around Puget Sound.
