The first phase is what we're seeing now, which is (oversimplifying here) a non-hydrostatic dynamic core however mainly with the same physics as the old GFS. This is expected to become operational sometime early 2019 - unless it fails something in its review period of course. The second phase appears to be an "advanced physics" upgrade which is expected in the next upgrade cycle (early 2020?)

If you're interested in reading more on the FV3, see:
http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/users/Alicia.Bentley/fv3gfs/

craig@luckgrib.com (a sailor, not a meteorologist...)Craig McPheetershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17160860716380052097noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478606652950905956.post-78183152763921264592018-09-12T07:28:20.217-07:002018-09-12T07:28:20.217-07:00Note that the European (ECMWF) model has been devi...Note that the European (ECMWF) model has been deviating from the rest showing the track kinking to the southwest as it got close to the coast. The wildfires have killed dozens of people and destroyed thousands of homes in recent years.

The legislation sparked debate because it also will allow another utility company — Pacific Gas & Electric — to raise electric rates to cover the costs of lawsuits from last year's deadly wildfires amid fears it could go bankrupt otherwise.

The bill also requires investor-owned utilities to safeguard their equipment to reduce the risk of fires.

Southern California Edison said the insulated wire installation is part of a $582 million plan that would also be paid for in part by a rate increase. It includes removing trees and brush, installing cameras to help emergency crews assess a situation and respond quicker and adding weather stations so the utility can decide the safest way to operate if the risk of a fire is high.

Fire investigators have blamed PG&E equipment for 12 of last year's wildfires in Northern California's wine country, including two that killed 15 people combined. Authorities have not determined fault for the Tubbs Fire, the most destructive in state history, which destroyed thousands of homes in Santa Rosa.

PG&E is facing dozens of lawsuits from insurers, which have spent billions settling insurance claims from homeowners.Larry.......Seattlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01582212295754116510noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478606652950905956.post-43534035948134328822018-09-11T10:07:46.797-07:002018-09-11T10:07:46.797-07:00The NHC site made it sound like the floater satell...The NHC site made it sound like the floater satellite images for individual storms were no longer available.
