Their last day is August 4th then there will be no one qualified to do the balloons releases, including the NWS. Right now the Fairbanks station is scheduled to be shut down and several other radiosonde stations in Alaska might be shuttered as well. Seems like any closures won't bode well for the forecast models!Rooster The Kidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13680642940627075425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478606652950905956.post-37423971121231667342012-06-14T17:03:45.191-07:002012-06-14T17:03:45.191-07:00http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2012/20120601_...http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2012/20120601_titley.htmlmjgrotahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10752674147894791628noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478606652950905956.post-56600592130705477382012-06-14T17:00:37.423-07:002012-06-14T17:00:37.423-07:00Good news is that Radm Dave Titley is joining NWS....Good news is that Radm Dave Titley is joining NWS. He is smart and experienced with tough issues. I spent a short time at see with him in 1978 when he was a young Ltjg on the USS Farragut. I claim some credit in talking him into joining the Navy's Met/Oceano Community. We rode out a storm force Mistral. One of my best forecasts ever.mjgrotahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10752674147894791628noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478606652950905956.post-29834682126806846782012-06-12T20:02:54.030-07:002012-06-12T20:02:54.030-07:00Hmmm. I feel it is more likely it might getter harder to get the funding because of the "misappropriations" of money we already have. It is something I can see Congress saying.

On the topic of NOAA being part of Commerce, maybe there won't be a Department of Commerce much longer?
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/13/us-usa-obama-reform-idUSTRE80C0SA20120113

This news is from January. I wasn't able to find anything more recent, so I'm not sure if Obama is still trying to do it or if the plan has been nixed (may have to wait until after elections?)

How do you feel about NOAA being part of Interior instead?

One more thing I wanted to mention. On the topic of improving NWP in the U.S. I was wondering if you'd heard about the new supercomputer NCAR is getting.

Here is the article I found on it:

http://www.nola.com/newsflash/index.ssf/story/new-wyoming-supercomputer-expected-to-boost-atmospheric-science/80d8a4b1d3c4d792be45b6a9230f5aecAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14468734038469683964noreply@blogger.com
