A break
It is nearly impossible to time accurately the passage of rainfall bands accurately the day before..so it is time for what we call a "nowcast" in the business.
A band of precipitation is now moving through the central sound (see satellite and radar imagery at about 9 AM). The implication...there should be a major break this morning and early afternoon...so it will be a good time to get out there for recreation or gardening. Nothing really organized behind it...so this should be a decent afternoon. I will be heading to the NW Flower and Garden show at n0on to sign books....so I will have to hit my garden later...

I would rather garden in the rain. So, decent is one of those words which I've never figured out what it means. It was used all the time when I was working in meteorology and for the life of me I couldn't figure out what was meant by it.

ReplyDeleteYou have made it clear you don't like subjective terms when speaking about the weather. The problem is, you always manage to mention how you would rather it be raining, or grey or whatever. So I think it's pretty safe to say where you stand. If Cliff said that the weather was "nice" everytime it was raining or grey, I doubt we would hear a peep out of you. Long story short, everybody knows how you feel about this, so why not let it go? Cliff is not going to change his terminology because it doesn't suit your weather preferences.
Hey Cliff, you mentioned about a big break in the weather today. We sure got it alright!:o) Only a few early morning showers here in Woodinville, then the late morning/early afternoon was basically partly to mostly cloudy. And wouldn`t you know it, though not nearly as much sunshine as yesterday, my high today managed to reach 61. Quite nice to have to have 2 days of mild temps.
ReplyDeletePhil, I'm not expecting him to. I'm simply writing a comment. Am I not allowed to do that? All of you are. And all of you write more than one, and state your opinions. Are you discriminating against me because of my opinion? I don't think that's right if you are.
ReplyDeleteAnd Phil, Dan probably doesn't want to let it go until something is done about it. :)
ReplyDeleteYou people need to find a hobby.
ReplyDeleteGlad to have met you this afternoon at the Garden Show, Cliff! I will be very sad if this was indeed the last show. My wife and I always look forward to the Flower & Garden Show and look at it as a kind of harbinger of spring.
Again, thanks for being there, I'm excited to read your book!!
Decent means adequate to the purpose. If one likes to be precise, then one should also try to use a logic that makes sense.
ReplyDelete"I like to garden in the rain, therefore I don't understand the word set that includes 'decent'" seems to be two orthogonal statements.
I like to pun, so I read the word decent as meaning too cold to garden in the buff.
Thanks for the blog, Dr. Mass.
My hobby IS weather. :-)
ReplyDeleteWell think anyone here in the interior lowlands and possibly the foot hills of Cascades could of called this a decent afternoon. In other words....a nice/mild afternoon with partly cloudy skies and another day with spring like warmth. Though depending on where you were depended how much or how little sun you saw.
ReplyDeleteDan... you have your own opinion about liking to garden in the rain. But rest of us? No way. I can tell you that a lot more people come out on partly cloudy/sunny days vs rainy gray days. Why? Because the sunshine and warmth makes them want to get out there and 'do it'(for what ever it is there doing outside). I`m just going with the flow here, but would guess the general population here Seattle/Puget Sound would rather see sun any day over rainy gloomy days.
All,
ReplyDeletePLEASE!! Lets stop all this business about terminology-- decent weather, nice weather, etc., etc. Lets just accept everyone's way of expressing themselves without editorial comment!..cliff

ReplyDeleteThanks Cliff!
ReplyDeleteI agree Cliff, we should be able to use are very own terms with out this non sence and being ' picked upon' on how we use certain terminology relating to weather on here.
ReplyDeleteCliff, from what I've read, it seems the way to avoid the discussion about terminology is to not include it in your blog in the first place. Just an observation.
ReplyDeleteAndy, I'm sure he's also talking to those like Phil and yourself who chastise those like Dan that have a different opinion, and is just trying to express it.

ReplyDeleteI think mainly Cliff is talking about the people questioning terminology, just like it says in his comment. This has been something that's been going on for quite a while now and I've seen Cliff ask people to respect the way he writes and uses terminology many times, and I totally agree with that. That's the only reason I have made the comments I have made, because I enjoy reading the comments except for when a few people continually question things he says and argue about it. That kind of ruins it for me. I probably go too far at times in my response to some of those comments. So I'm not going to involve myself with it anymore, because I have a tough time holding my tongue when I see that stuff, and I suppose it's not up to me to say anything. It's Cliff's blog, and a great one at that. I'm going to stop reading/commenting on the comments section and just stick to reading what Cliff writes. Thanks for always sharing your knowledge with us Cliff.
Phil, all I was saying was that Dr. Mass said "Lets just accept everyone's way of expressing themselves without editorial comment!", and I just noticed that Dan at 2:41 was simply making a comment stating his opinion. I didn't see anything in that message attacking Dr. Mass for his opinions. Then a couple people, yourself included, came along and basically told Dan to stop writing. So Dr. Mass's comment to accept everyone's way of expressing themselves means too that Dan should be allowed to express himself without people jumping all over him. Am I right?
ReplyDeleteYou are right anon nice job...now let it go
