Big Flakes and Little Flakes During the Weekend Snow. Why?

A number of you sent me emails about the snowflakes over the weekend.

Why were the flakes so SMALL Saturday morning?  Tiny flakes!

And then they got much bigger Saturday afternoon and on Sunday.  Why?

To see what they mean, here is an image of the snow falling Sunday morning. BIG FLAKES!  Similar on Saturday afternoon


But an image Saturday morning had snow so small you could barely see it! But snow was piling up.


There is a reason for this difference.  The size, shape, and structure of ice and snow crystals vary with temperature, humidity and vertical motion in the atmosphere.

So let's do some ice crystal 101!

Snow begins with ice crystals that form when water vapor freezes on to small ice nuclei (small particles) in the atmosphere.  This is a process called deposition.  

Because of its molecular structure, water vapor produces six-sided ice crystals (hexagonal if you want to impress your friends).

It turns out the structure of the ice crystals (also called ice crystal habit) depends on temperature and humidity (see figure).

Check out the figure below.  On one axis is temperature.  On the other is something called supersaturation.   When air rises, it can cool and can become saturated (100% relative humidity).  But believe or not, with strong upward motion, the relative humidity can increase ABOVE 100%.  Amazing.  Relative humidity above 100% is called supersaturation.

Keep in mind that ice crystals form high in the atmosphere, where conditions are cooler than at the surface.


Back to the figure.  For relatively warm temperatures (-10 to 0°C), the ice crystals are generally small and in the form of plates and cylinders.  

But if temperatures aloft are in a magical zone from roughly -12 to -18C and supersaturation is high (which means strong upward vertical motion), giant dendrites can form.  This is known in the weather business as the Dendritic Growth Zone (DGZ).  For these conditions, the atmosphere is at maximum efficiency for forming ice crystals and snow.  Cooler temperatures result in more of the smaller columns and plates.

And there is something else: when big snowflakes forming in cold air aloft fall into warmer--near freezing or above freezing air in the lower atmosphere they can start melting or become "stickier".  They can hit and join together into giant snowflakes in a process call aggregation

So now you are ready to understand what happened over the weekend!

We can start with the simulated model sounding from the UW forecasting system, showing how temperatures and moisture (dew point) varied with height at 4 AM Saturday morning, when the small snow crystals were falling.   Temperature is on the x-axis (°C) and height is in pressure (700 is around 10,000 ft).  Temperature is shown by red line and dew point by blue.  
When temperature and dew point overlap, the air is saturated (you need that to produce snow!).   I have indicated with two dashed lines the temperatures good for big dendritic crystals to form (the Dendritic Growth Zone).


The strong forcing and saturation at this time (Saturday morning) were BELOW the DGZ (see arrow).  In fact the air was not even saturated at the altitude of the DGZ.     Good for the growth of small crystals like we saw.   

And temperatures were below freezing near the surface, so not good for snow to stick together (aggregation).

But now  let's check out the vertical sounding predicted for that afternoon when big snowflakes were falling.  The air had become saturated in the critical temperature zone of the DGZ...so more big snow crystals!  And there was lots of warming near the surface--even above freezing. So the falling big crystals would get stick and aggregate together in big snowflakes....just like we saw!  No wonder the snowflakes were bigger.


The bottom line is that  the type of snowflakes reaching the surface depends on temperature and humidity aloft, which are controlled by many things, including the strength of upward motion in the atmosphere and the changes in temperature and moisture produced by the winds aloft.

There are definitely some little folks that are disappointed that the snow is now melting....

  2. I always thought snowflakes were based on temperature alone. I had no idea about the other explanation, which I still don't understand; however, I'll read this post several times, and hopefully grok more of your explanation.

    Looks like I'm in for another two week thaw (ugh) and I notice weather.com is predicting more snow right around when my property will thaw. Hopefully, they're upper temp forecasts will hold.

  4. Cliff, what role does evaporation/sublimation play in the size of snowflakes that reach the ground? Thursday, the Doppler showed light snow here in the Kent area all day, but nothing reaching the ground. When a few flurries would make it, they were tiny.

  7. Thank you! Fascinating. But a question remains that I've always had, often asked, and never found a satisfying answer to: I appreciate the hexagonal structure of ice crystals as it relates to the molecular geometry of water. But in the formation of large dendritic flakes, what maintains the macroscopic symmetry? I imagine that as the crystal grows, molecules of water freeze out of the vapor, but if a there is growth on one edge of the flake, why does the identical growth occur symmetrically at the other six (or 12!) positions on the flake. It has always seemed like spooky action at a distance, somehow. If you can address this mystery at some convenient time, I would be most appreciative. Thank you again, for all you do.

  8. Can you explain how it is that Whatcom County got. Measly four inches. I’m tired of being cheated while being clobbered with those BRUTAL BONE BITTER ARCTIC WINDS. I know you can’t stop it. But darn it. It seems we get cheated every year. And we are further north.

  9. The latest weather loops seem to indicate that there is some possibility of more snow next week. If as predicted by the models the coldest part of the polar vortex will be near Eastern Alaska and Western Canada as shortwaves move over the top of a ridge through Alaska and down the coast, it seems as if there is a possibility that it might get colder than it was over the weekend when shortwaves moved through a ridge as it weakend. The models also seem to indicate that after the snow ends there might be clearing skies and even colder temperatures.

  11. There are almost 100 different classifications of freezing precipitation (sleet, snow grains, snow pellets, etc.). As an ex air traffic controller I had to memorize all of them. Weather tests were always the most difficult. Weather is mostly memorization.

  12. Thank you, AndrewM. That link leads to an excellent article. It's particularly helpful to see in the detailed close up photos that the symmetry is *not exact* as I had thought, and that supports the notion that the symmetry (and variety!) arises from depositions in various temp/pressure/humidity conditions, which are the same over the dimensions of the growing flake, but change over time. Nice. Again, thanks.
