There are few greater disappointments for our region than the precipitous decline of KNKX, a public radio station whose listenership and web traffic have declined rapidly as its news coverage has taken on a shrill partisan tone.
But it is worse than that.
The change in KNKX has denied the region the balanced news coverage required for a free society to make wise decisions, and the station's implicit advocacy of an uber-progressive agenda, including defunding police, has contributed to the profound increase in crime and urban deterioration apparent throughout the region.
Declining Public Interest and Listenership
Google Trends provides a tool for viewing the number of searches over time, and the numbers for KNKX are shown below.
You will notice a major drop in mid-2020 as the editorial policy of the station shifted to pushing identity politics and they ejected their meteorologist for speaking up against the violence in Seattle. And the online interest in KNKX continues to decline.
But what about listenership statistics, such as those provided by Neilsen Company? As shown below, the proportion of the Seattle listening audience tuning in to KNKX (the market share) dropped 40% during the past 6 months from 3.6 to 2.8.
What about the total number of station listeners, a measure known as CUME?
A decline from roughly 320,000 to 220,000—a third of their audience is gone. Last fall KNKX had a funding drive and failed to reach its target—something that never happened before. No wonder KNKX stopped showing their goals during fund drives.
A Biased, Partisan Public Radio Station
The management of a public radio station has a responsibility to provide unbiased information to the public, untinged by political advocacy. A public radio station should not have a social change agenda. Communicating truth and facts, and providing a venue for discussion and debate should be central.
KNKX management has failed in this crucial arena. This is easy to prove.
Go to the KNKX public website or load their app, and you inevitably see a front-page with highly racialized, politicized material. I mean day after day. Serious news or analysis is rare. Below are a few examples.
Among the “enhancements” at the station has been the hiring of a social justice reporter, Lilly Ana Fowler, who produces socially “appropriate” material. This reporter has an active Twitter account where she provides activist materials, such as the statement that the border patrol was whipping Haitians trying to enter our southern border (see below). This "information" was not true, by the way.
Ms. Fowler has a very strong anti-police stance.
One knew there was a serious problem when the KNKX program director, Matt Martinez, talked about his racial ideas in an interview on Current.Org, where he discussed “uncomfortable truths about race in public radio.” In that interview, he complained about KNKX’s “very white audience”, “white-led organization”, “mostly white newsroom”, and “all white announcers.” Replace white with another race and you see how inappropriate his comments were.
Mr. Martinez hired an activist news director, Flogangela Davila, who has overseen a sea change in KNKX's on-air and online offerings towards a progressive left viewpoint. Ms. Davila has steered KNKX news coverage, both on-air and online, into the politicized outlet it has become.
Cliff, this is heart-breaking. So many of the on-air DJ's have been working in Seattle radio for decades, and this management is taking them all down. I hope that the station can recover. They have provided wonderful music and information in the past. Port Townsend has it's very own radio station that I have turned to in lieu of KNKX.
ReplyDeleteWhoa…..if you think KNKX is woke, Port Townsend’s KPTZ makes KNKX sound like a GOP convention.
DeleteMethinks thou doth protest too much. Let it go Cliff, you're vindicated.
ReplyDeleteGet woke, go broke.
ReplyDeleteCliff: Several years ago I talked with Joey Cohn at a fundraiser. He told me then that many KNKX listeners wanted you, Cliff, booted off the station because you were too soft on climate change. He asked my opinion. I replied "Of course not!", and "Cliff Mass presents a valuable point of view". So we know what happened soon after...
ReplyDeleteI stopped listening, and donating, after KNKX changed their music format to what I call "the new elevator music".
NPR (and the CPB) and it's member radio/TV stations jumped the shark a looooong time ago, used to listen to "All Things Considered" back in the day, when you could still separate the leftist advocacy from straight news. Those days aren't coming back, and they need to finally cut the taxpayer umbilical cord, the US citizenry has no interest in backing media outlets in this day and age.
ReplyDeleteA couple of Truths here...your blog should always be a safe haven for your own spin on any topic, and your employer has no right to punish you for your thoughts!...I do not always agree with your posts--but so what?
ReplyDeleteSad but true. Is there any public radio station that's different? I happen to agree with many, not all, progressive causes, but I'm not interested in a never-ending consciousness-raising session. I grow tried of being preached to. I've enjoyed NPR for 50 years, bit it's painful now to listen. It's not that they are lying, but they're sermonizing. Ever since George Floyd was killed, there's no end to it. Thus the esteemed Prof. mass, goes down in the book of woke casualties such as Sen Al Franken and Garrision Keilor, who singlehandedly made public radio a Saturday night must-listen appointment, in that golden era when public radio mixed variety entertainment with its earnest, self-righteous, agenda-driven schedule.

ReplyDeleteKNKX should get Mónica Guzmán on from Crosscut to talk about her book. ‘I Never Thought of It That Way’. Public Radio and TV should be bringing people together across the divide by presenting factual news, without a partisan agenda.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I've heard from Cliff on Climate Change....is facts. Not hyperbole, not guidance...not hand holding...just facts.
ReplyDeleteHe assumes the readers are intelligent enough to do their own homework and make up their own minds.
I read somewhere that you can't teach anyone anything, but, when someone is truly desirous of learning, it's impossible to stop them.
Just let it go Cliff—KNKX is not going to rehire you! It will probably die a slow, but much-deserved death!
ReplyDeleteIf it weren't for subsidies, National Public Radio could not survive. It galls me that NPR receives taxpayer money. We see the problem with government subsidies all of the time. Consider wind turbines, solar generation, electric cars, etc. Let the free market decide what survives and what fails. Any time government subsidies something there is graft and corruption that siphons money from its intended purpose.
For close to four decades, I listened to NPR almost daily for news. But in the past few years, all of the news programming on KNKX has been dominated by social justice stories, or social justice commentary. It became such an absurdly large fraction of their news that I had to turn elsewhere to find actual news. So, it is interesting that the stats show I am not the only listener that KNKX has lost.
ReplyDeleteI was a KPLU/KNKX listener and donor for 30 years. I no longer listen or donate. Unfortunately, KNKX is not alone. I have subscribed to Science News magazine for 40 years. It used to be a reliable science magazine that stuck with facts and stayed away from politics. Five or six years ago, I began to notice a shift in editorial policy. Science News has now become a woke political advocacy rag. I have heard that the same thing has happened to Scientific American. Where is the money coming from for this? And where can we go for unbiased reporting? Thank you, Cliff, for maintaining your integrity and respecting ours.
ReplyDeleteI don't listen to KUOW either because they're the same as KNKX in terms of biased coverage of just about everything. Power on, Cliff.
