Midsummer Air Quality Check

It is almost mid-July, and it is time to check on Northwest air quality.

According to the EPA's AirNow website, all measurement sites are showing good air quality (green dots), as shown below

The high-resolution visible satellite image today shows clear skies as well.

The biggest trouble spot for poor air quality is in Minnesota and neighboring states, with smoke from Canada.

The number of fires is now increasing as the fuels dry out and humans are causing ignitions.   We have been lucky with the relative lack of lightning this year, which results in fewer fires in remote areas.

The good news is that little lightning is predicted over the next week...and we expect a gradual cool-down.

  1. Cliff, what's your thoughts on the wind event coming to the Okanogan Valley Monday night. Spokane NWS discussion really talking about possibility of gusts over 50mph. HI RES models not showing quite as strong and they say it depends largely on how much rain BC gets to enhance cold pool. Either way looks like I should batten down the hatches.

  3. These 'comma clouds' appeared in the sky about 11 AM Sunday morning north of the old homestead here in the Middle of Nowhere, eastern Washington state:

The comma-shaped clouds lasted about half an hour and then disappeared.

  4. Here is something to go with last blog, just heard weather on local radio station, they call for "gusty" winds and elevated fire danger. Nothing about our High wind warning and possible damaging winds.
