A serious "autumn" front will reach the Northwest coast tomorrow night, bringing regional rain and a reduction of local wildfires.
A front that arrives one day before the official start of autumn on Monday morning.
The visible satellite image this afternoon shows the front offshore (indicated by the red arrow).
And by 11 AM Sunday, the frontal rain will reach eastern Washington, with residual showers over the western slopes of the Cascades.
Talking about temperatures....western Washington will cool into the upper 60s on Sunday (see forecast below), warm into the 70s for a few days, followed by a sustained decline, with highs remaining in the 60s. There will be a feeling of autumn in the air.
Cliff...I think I could feel a bit of autumn in the air already yesterday, when I as walking our dogs on Orcas. I felt a warm breeze for a moment followed by a notably cool breeze a few seconds later...Mother Nature signaling an upcoming change....
ReplyDeleteIn the second picture, looks like one can clearly see a rain shadow effect for Port Townsend.
ReplyDeleteHey Cliff. Just watched a clip from King5 talking about La Niña and El Niño but it was a bit confusing. Can discuss what to expect this Fall/Winter? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteProfessor Mass,
ReplyDeleteThank you for giving us a heads up about this front. It looks impressive from the visible satellite. While I look forward to the rain, I wonder if this going to be a wind-maker (as in a producer of blustery to gusty winds). I don't see any warnings up for wind, but where I'm at on the coast, serious winds can and do occur even if warnings aren't in place. This past Tuesday, for instance, was particularly blustery with the east winds. Wednesday was bad too (lights were flickering in the evening...power nearly went out) though I believe those winds were more westerly.
With the front now long past and clear, blue skies out at the coast, I can now answer my own question: it wasn't much of a windmaker. It did produce some healthy rain, which was most welcome.
DeleteThis will also be among the driest Septembers on record for multiple interior Western Washington locations.
ReplyDeleteWoke up around 4:30 this morning and it was raining then. By 6AM or so, it was letting up. It's been dry, but mostly cloudy with periodic sun poking through the clouds. I'm looking forward for more rain in the coming weeks.
ReplyDeletePlanted fall grass seed last week to repair earlier mole damage, really needed last night's rain, I hope the day time temperatures remain over 60F for a couple more weeks to allow germination.
ReplyDeleteAre you going to make any predictions about winter this year? My son is telling me models are saying this year is going to be the big snow year we haven’t seen in quite some time. Seems like wishful thinking based on the past years, so I’d love to hear your thoughts.
