Brief Update

First, this is showtime for NW Washington as a band of precipitation overuns the cold air coming out of the Fraser. It is now snowing at Bellingham and Orcas Island. NE winds have strengthened...to 30 mph at Bellingham Airport.

The latest computer forecasts (initialized at 10 AM this morning) are more threatening for Monday...but lets view tonight's runs before we jump to conclusions. We will have cold enough air...the question is precipitation. The classic situation is to have a significant upper trough move southward in northerly flow...the new runs are suggesting this....but lets take some time to analyze the situation...and also look at the ensemble forecasts, which are becoming available for the time of potential lowland snow.

  1. I hope it snows here in Skagit County! We are so close to Bellingham yet those darn Chuckanut mountains always seem to block the cold air.

  3. What happened to the special weather statement that was released last weekend about this upcoming weather? I would think something would be out by now regarding the weekend and Monday.

  5. cont.............

seems like a battle of air going on. Usually with a moderate Fraser Outflow in Bellingham, temperatures drop quickly. It ( dry bulb) seems to be confused.

  6. Yup, it is snowing here in Olga (on Orcas.) Parts of the road from Rosario to Orcas are in near blizzard conditions with heavy snow and wind.

It is 31 degrees and windy at 300 feet on Mt Entrance, facing Bellingham. The snow is sticking to the gravel but not the highway. There are fairly gusty winds and a range of snow types from ice crystals to heavy wet stuff.

I'm glad that I finally got a four wheel drive truck (after getting my other one stuck for the first time in 20 years two years ago) but I wish that I had ordered the front blade for the tractor already.

All is cosy here with a (gas) fire going and the deer bedde down outside. There are some fairly good wind gusts but nothing like a couple of nights ago.
